Liturgical Catechesis

Reverence is, of course, a key component to expressing our faith. A partner for reverence is respect. We reverence Christ by respecting our fellow human beings. In this weekend’s readings, we hear of trust, acceptance, and faith. Our greatest act of faith is communion, which strengthens and deepens our daily living.

Now, you may ask, what is reverence? That concept has many nuances and may mean different things to different people. I offer you my own Top Ten Ways to Show Reverence. Like David Letterman, I started with #10, so now we’re at #1.

Number 1: Receiving communion often.

Receiving communion often—at least weekly at our Sunday holy day of obligation. Attending Sunday Mass and joining in communion—receiving the Body and Blood of Christ—are an obligation and a privilege. Sunday is a Holy Day of Obligation with good reason: we remember, reverently, Christ’s ongoing sacrifice for us. We share in the sacrifice by reserving this time for the Lord and our community. We both give to and receive from the Mass—we are less without it and it is less without us. As we share the Word and the Eucharist, we know more and we become more the Body of Christ. The Word calls us, teaches us, encourages us; the Bread calls us to be changed by the love of Christ; the Blood gives us the Way. When we prepare for Mass, we might ask “What might Jesus say to me today?” Let us be open to the message. After Mass, we might ask “What is Jesus calling me to do?” Let us be willing to do as He asks.

Many among us remember the old rule of always going to confession before receiving communion. If you have any doubt about your status for receiving communion, the primary sacrament of forgiveness and reconciliation, please see one of our priests. Communion renews and strengthens us. Receiving the Eucharist every week should be the norm, the regular pattern of our lives, not the exception!

What a concept: we, the Body of Christ, receive the Body and Blood of Christ, thus sanctifying ourselves to serve the world as Christ did and does.
We show our reverence by receiving the Body of Christ, understanding and accepting what we receive, and living as Christ would have us live.
